In 1987, the Dalai Lama’s long-held vision materialized with the establishment of Tibet House US in New York City, a cultural center dedicated to preserving Tibetan heritage. Over the years, the Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert has become a standout event in a city renowned for its philanthropic shows, uniting prominent musicians from both Eastern and Western traditions on the iconic Carnegie Hall stage. “What happens is that people meet for the first time and start collaborating, and things that would never happen any other place happen here,” recalled Philip Glass, co-founder of Tibet House US, when discussing the unique atmosphere of the event.
This year marks the 39th annual concert, scheduled for March 3, celebrating the Year of the Fire Horse. With Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson, named Billboard’s 2024 Artist Indie Icon, as artistic directors, the concert promises a stellar lineup featuring Anderson, Debbie Harry, Kate Pierson of The B-52s, Allison Russell, Toro y Moi, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Tenzin Choegyal, the Resistance Revival Chorus, and the Scorchio Quartet, among others. Musical direction will be helmed by Tony Shanahan, while Uma Thurman and Maggie Gyllenhaal, along with Peter Sarsgaard, Arden Wohl, and Jonah Freeman, will serve as honorary chairs.
Both Anderson and the Philip Glass Ensemble have frequently performed at the concert, and many artists returning this year have participated in previous editions—some after long absences. Last year’s event featured memorable performances from Jackson Browne, Michael Stipe, Orville Peck, Arooj Aftab, and Tune-Yards.
Tickets for the event are available online. The Year of the Fire Horse is noted for its spiritual significance, symbolizing transformation and opportunities for merit-making.
