Evan and Gregg Spiridellis to Create Their First Animated Film ‘Space Unicorn’ with Marc Haimes Co-Writing
Fraternal Filmmaking Duo Develops Animated Feature ‘Space Unicorn’
Evan and Gregg Spiridellis, the creative team behind Spiridellis Bros. Studios, are gearing up to cast for their first animated feature, Space Unicorn. The project marks a significant venture for the brothers, renowned for their innovative contributions to animation.
Space Unicorn follows Astraluna Opal, an idealistic unicorn representing the last glimmer of joy in Unicornopolis. This once-vibrant society, overwhelmed by its duty to deliver rainbows, has nearly forgotten the essence of happiness. Stranded on a distant planet alongside her reluctant sidekick, Astraluna must confront a sinister techno-tyrant intent on replacing authentic joy with his synthetic brand, JOYYY®. Along the way, they encounter a punk-rock banana, an adventurous chimp, and a frog wearing underwear, leading Astraluna to discover that genuine happiness is rooted in sharing experiences.
Evan and Gregg Spiridellis will direct the film, which is based on a script co-written with Marc Haimes, whose previous work includes the Academy Award-nominated Kubo and the Two Strings and the Emmy-winning series Ultraman. The film will be produced by Gary Foster of Krasnoff Foster Productions, with casting directed by Tracie Fiss.
The project is inspired by Parry Gripp’s viral song, also titled Space Unicorn, developed through an exclusive partnership that grants Spiridellis Bros. Studios global rights to create characters and stories from Gripp’s entire music catalog. This collaboration aims to establish a family entertainment universe known as the Parryverse, where Gripp’s music will underlie various formats, including digital shorts, television series, games, toys, and live events.
The Spiridellis brothers have garnered recognition for their work with JibJab, a pioneer in viral content since its establishment in 1999, and for creating StoryBots, an award-winning franchise that originated on YouTube and was later acquired by Netflix. Since founding Spiridellis Bros. Studios in October, they have attracted funding from notable investors, including Polaris Founders Capital, Caruso Ventures, and prominent figures such as Ashton Kutcher and Tim Ferriss. The studio is also exploring the integration of proprietary and third-party pipelines utilizing AI tools.
