Erin Kellyman and Tim McGraw Join Kevin Bacon in Hulu’s Southern Bastards
Erin Kellyman and Tim McGraw are set to star alongside Kevin Bacon in Southern Bastards, a new drama pilot for Hulu directed and executive produced by Reinaldo Marcus Green.
In this adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel series by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, Kellyman will portray Roberta, a former Marine, while McGraw will take on the role of Coach Boss. Bacon’s character, Earl, was announced earlier.
The narrative follows a determined military veteran who travels to Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father. Upon her arrival, she discovers a perilous web of organized crime led by the region’s celebrated high school football coach.
Kellyman’s character, Roberta, faces military charges following an incident in Afghanistan. She is depicted as intelligent and psychologically intricate, grappling with generational trauma and a penchant for violence. Initially driven by revenge, Roberta soon realizes that in order to effect change and dismantle Boss’s empire, she must establish her roots within Craw County.
McGraw’s Coach Boss is portrayed as a legendary figure in the community, embodying the complexities of Southern football culture. As head coach of Craw County High School, he leads an organized crime syndicate that extends beyond the town’s borders, using ruthless means to safeguard his territory.
Bacon’s Earl is the son of the former Sheriff Bert, who ruled Craw County with an iron fist, further emphasizing the show’s exploration of power dynamics within the community.
Southern Bastards is produced by Onyx Collective, POV Entertainment, and Proximity Media, in collaboration with Fifth Season. Bill Dubuque, known for his work on Ozark, penned the teleplay and serves as an executive producer alongside Matt Olmstead, who will also act as showrunner. Additional executive producers include Aaron, Latour, Green, as well as Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media.
Erin Kellyman, acclaimed for her recent role in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, has built a diverse portfolio, including appearances in Eleanor the Great, Blitz, Disney+’s Willow, and Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Tim McGraw, a Grammy-winning country artist with over 106 million records sold, was most recently seen in Taylor Sheridan’s series Yellowstone and its prequel 1883. His extensive film credits also include Tomorrowland, The Blind Side, Four Christmases, and Friday Night Lights.
