Elijah Wood Shares Thoughts on Returning as Frodo and His Love for the Character
Elijah Wood Remains Tight-Lipped on Potential Return as Frodo in Upcoming Film
Elijah Wood has not confirmed nor denied his involvement in the upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis. However, he expressed a desire to continue playing Frodo for as long as he is able.
In a recent interview with The Times (U.K.), Wood reflected on co-star Ian McKellen, who last year hinted at the film’s details during a convention. “It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian sort of let the cat out of the bag," Wood shared. "I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun and thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.”
Scheduled for release in late 2027, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will explore the events that transpired between the conclusion of The Hobbit prequel trilogy and the beginning of the main saga.
“I’m just excited,” Wood said when asked about the project. He acknowledged McKellen’s earlier insistence that no one else should portray Gandalf, adding, “I totally get that. I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo either as long as I’m alive and able. And I can also recognize what fun that is going to be—when you are in the cinema and you see the hat turn around and it’s Gandalf. Because I’m also a fan, and excited to see how it all comes together.”
Wood first stepped into the role of Frodo in 2001 with the release of The Fellowship of the Ring, which significantly elevated his career. He later reprised the role in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012.
This new installment will reunite the Oscar-winning team behind The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are set to produce the two films for Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema, with Zane Weiner also on board as a producer. Walsh and Boyens will write the screenplay, collaborating with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou.
