Ducks Fall to the Wild as Playoff Hopes Continue
Minnesota Wild Secure Regular Season Victory Against Ducks
In a decisive finish to their regular season, the Minnesota Wild edged the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 at home on Tuesday night. The game marked a significant moment for rookie Hunter Haight, who netted his first career goal, while goaltender Jesper Wallstedt showcased his playoff readiness with 35 saves.
Danila Yurov and Robby Fabbri also contributed to the Wild’s scoreline, helping the team extend its dominance over the Ducks to 21 wins in their last 22 encounters, including eight consecutive victories. Wallstedt, who currently ranks second in the NHL for save percentage, concluded his debut season with an 18-9-6 record, raising questions about the Wild’s goaltending strategy heading into the postseason alongside Filip Gustavsson. Notably, Wallstedt allowed just 12 goals over his last six starts.
Mason McTavish scored for the Ducks during a power play in the first period and again tipped in a shot with 45 seconds left in the game. Despite the loss, the Ducks celebrated their first playoff berth since 2018, clinched during a previous game thanks to Nashville’s defeat to San José. With 90 points and only one game remaining, the Ducks’ recent form has not been ideal, as they have recorded only one win in their last eight outings. They are no longer in contention for the Pacific Division title and may risk slipping to the second wild-card spot, which would lead to a challenging matchup against Presidents’ Trophy winners, the Colorado Avalanche.
Historically, the Ducks have struggled in the playoffs, with their last series victory dating back to 2017 against Edmonton. Meanwhile, the Wild decided to rest ten regular players, providing Haight, the team’s 2022 second-round draft pick, a chance to step into the role of second-line center. He seized the opportunity by scoring in the second period, marking a promising start to his NHL career.
