Donovan Dent’s Clutch Performance Leads UCLA to Overtime Victory Against No. 10 Illinois
UCLA Upsets No. 10 Illinois with Dramatic Overtime Win
In a thrilling showdown at Pauley Pavilion, UCLA overcame a 23-point deficit to defeat No. 10 Illinois, 95-94, thanks to a game-winning layup in overtime from Donovan Dent. The Bruins’ remarkable comeback stunned fans and solidified their NCAA tournament prospects.
UCLA head coach Mick Cronin referenced a historic moment in college basketball following the game, saying, “Let me tell you about coaching: Ball goes in, you look smart. The kids executed.” Dent’s overtime dash mirrored Tyus Edney’s legendary run in 1995, igniting the home crowd as they stormed the court after officials confirmed the buzzer-beater.
The Bruins (18-9, 10-6 Big Ten) maintained close ties and lead changes throughout the game, marking a crucial victory after they had suffered two significant losses to top-ranked teams earlier in the week. This win against Illinois (22-5, 13-3) not only serves as a momentum boost but also enhanced UCLA’s standing among Quadrant 1 opponents ahead of the Big Ten tournament.
“We did not run one thing we practiced for the first 10 minutes because we were rattled,” said Cronin, reflecting on the earlier part of the game. “I didn’t like the look on their face before the game. I think it was almost like they had lost confidence.” Echoing Cronin’s sentiment, Dent emphasized the unity of the team, stating, “It’s all about what’s going on in the locker room… we’re at our highest point together as a team.”
The journey to this victory was complicated by various controversies surrounding the team, including Cronin’s decision to send center Steven Jamerson II to the locker room during the recent loss to Michigan State. The incidents drew public scrutiny, including calls for Cronin’s resignation, but the team regrouped and held several meetings to strengthen their focus.
Illinois started strong, particularly with their three-point shooting, making 10 of their first 19 attempts. However, their accuracy waned, and they were limited to just three successful shots from beyond the arc in the final 25 minutes, including a scoreless overtime. In contrast, UCLA shot 51% overall and showcased a prolific offensive performance led by Dent, who achieved his seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 15 assists.
Faced with strong competition on the boards, Illinois managed 20 offensive rebounds, creating crucial second-chance opportunities. Despite these challenges, UCLA’s hot shooting and Dent’s decisive play under pressure proved decisive.
As the game neared its conclusion, the scores were close in overtime, with Trent Perry securing a brief lead for UCLA. However, a late push from Illinois briefly placed them ahead before Dent’s heroic run sealed their victory.
Following this exhilarating match, UCLA will look to maintain their momentum in their upcoming game against crosstown rival USC on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion.
