Disneyland Seeks Permits to Replace Popular Attraction with New Development
Disneyland Files Confidential Demolition Permits for Iconic Attraction
ANAHEIM, Calif. – Disneyland Resort has officially submitted nine confidential demolition permits to the City of Anaheim, signaling a significant change in the Hollywood Land area of Disney California Adventure. The documents include plans to dismantle the "Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sully to the Rescue!" building, along with the nearby Hollywood Lounge quick-service location.
According to Disney officials, the beloved attraction is expected to remain open until 2027, allowing families additional time to enjoy the ride before it undergoes transformation as part of the expansion project linked to the "DisneylandForward" initiative.
The proposed redevelopment aims to introduce a new land inspired by "Avatar: The Way of Water," featuring a scenic boat ride and immersive environments reminiscent of the film’s vibrant world.
Despite the forthcoming changes, the "Monsters, Inc." ride, operational since 2006, will remain a staple at the park for another few years.
Background on the Changes
The recent permit filings are part of broader plans to enhance the Disneyland experience. Disneyland Resort officials stated these preparations are focused on long-term developments, emphasizing their intention to create new attractions in the area.
The transformation of Hollywood Land into a space themed around "Avatar" has been a topic of speculation since Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced its arrival in February 2023. As plans advance, many park-goers are eager to see how the expansion will unfold.
Implications for Visitors
Guests can continue to experience "Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue!" for at least another year while Imagineers begin preparations and utility relocation behind the scenes. More details regarding the attraction specifics and the official name for the new "Avatar" land are anticipated in future Disney fan events.
Despite the impending changes, park officials have reassured patrons that the current ride will provide families with young children ample options during this transitional phase.
