Disney Announces Premiere Date and Teaser for New Muppet Show Special
The beloved Muppets are set to make a return in 2024 with a new television special on Disney+ and ABC. Titled The Muppet Show, the event will premiere on February 4, featuring guest star Sabrina Carpenter and produced by Seth Rogen.
This special commemorates the 50th anniversary of the original series, which aired from 1976 to 1981. Iconic characters such as Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy will take the stage once more at the original Muppet Theatre, joined by Carpenter.
The upcoming special is anticipated to act as a backdoor pilot for a new series, as Disney continues to explore the extensive Jim Henson-created intellectual property. Recent adaptations include Muppets Haunted Mansion and The Muppets Mayhem series.
Produced by 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio, and Point Grey Pictures, The Muppet Show is written by Albertina Rizzo and directed by Alex Timbers. Executive producers for the special include Rogen, Carpenter, and others from Point Grey Pictures and The Muppets Studio.
Veteran performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel will reprise their roles as the Muppet characters. Goelz, who has been with The Muppets for over five decades, originated the beloved characters Gonzo and Dr. Bunsen Honeydew.
Additionally, all five seasons of The Muppet Show are currently available for streaming on Disney+.
