Warning: This story contains spoilers for episode 9 of Landman season 2.
Key Points
- The penultimate episode of Landman season 2 featured significant developments for Cami (Demi Moore) and Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton).
- Cami navigates challenges as president of M-Tex, the oil company founded by her late husband, Monty (Jon Hamm).
- The season finale of Landman is set to premiere on Sunday, Jan. 18, on Paramount+.
In the January 11 episode of Landman, drilling commenced on an offshore oil rig in Louisiana, a focal point of tension throughout the season. Cami fully embraced her role as president of M-Tex Oil, portraying a determined leadership style.
However, Tommy opposed the controversial drilling decision. Cami expressed her newfound understanding of her late husband Monty’s passion for the oil business, stating, “I understand it now, what drove him. There’s a rush, an exhilaration to the risk.” Tommy, reflecting on his past experiences, countered, “That rush cost me everything, and now I do everything I can do to avoid it,” referencing his bankruptcy during the 2008 financial crisis.

The concept of risk becomes a pivotal theme in their dialogue. Tommy insisted that the “rush” Cami now enjoys contributed to Monty’s demise, to which Cami rebutted, “I’d say it’s what allowed him to live.” This conversation culminated in Cami making a crucial decision; she ultimately fired Tommy, stating, “The president of my company can’t be averse to the very thing that built it.”
Tommy recognized the fragile nature of his position within the company, having frequently clashed with Cami since Monty’s death. During a conversation with Danny (Andy Garcia), Tommy openly remarked on the mistrust Cami had towards him.
“Me and her husband started out together, so at one point, I had a version of what she has,” Tommy explained. He noted that financial misfortunes led him to work for Monty before Cami took over, adding, “She don’t trust me ’cause she thinks I’m a loser. And she thinks I’m gonna lose her fortune.”

While their characters share a contentious relationship, the off-screen rapport between Moore, 63, and Thornton, 70, tells a different story. “Demi and I have known each other for a long time, actually for 35 years,” Thornton shared, recounting their history over several film projects involving her ex-husband, Bruce Willis. “I love that girl. She’s beautiful and amazing and so talented. I’m blessed to be with all these people in this show, frankly.”
The season 2 finale of Landman is anticipated to air on Sunday, Jan. 18, on Paramount+.
