Cristian Mungiu’s ‘Fjord’ Receives Enthusiastic 12-Minute Applause at Cannes, Setting a New Record for the Year
Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord Premieres at Cannes to Enthusiastic Reception
Palme d’Or-winning director Cristian Mungiu’s latest film, Fjord, made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday night, garnering a 12-minute standing ovation. The film stars Sebastian Stan, known for his role in The Apprentice, alongside Renate Reinsve, recognized for her performance in Sentimental Value.
In terms of audience reactions, Fjord leads the pack at the festival, with the next closest films being James Gray’s Paper Tiger, which received a 10-minute applause, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, which enjoyed 11 minutes of acclaim last Friday.
While the ovations aren’t the longest in Cannes history, they indicate strong interest. For context, Sean Baker’s Anora, which went on to win the festival’s Palme d’Or and later the Best Picture Oscar, elicited a 10-minute ovation in 2024.
Mungiu’s Fjord marks his first venture into English-language filmmaking. The narrative follows a mixed Romanian and Norwegian couple as they relocate with their children to the wife’s birthplace in a fjord village, only to face challenges from another couple with differing perspectives on life.
This film is Mungiu’s first release in three years, following the 2022 drama R.M.N. The acclaimed director has previously competed at Cannes four times, securing the Palme d’Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007, Best Screenplay for Beyond the Hills in 2012, and the Best Director award for Graduation in 2016.
Neon has already acquired the distribution rights for the film across the U.S., Canada, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
