Cozy Up in the Sun: Why Turks and Caicos is Perfect for Winter Getaways
Turks and Caicos: A Hidden Gem for Travelers Seeking Privacy and Luxury
Located southwest of the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos is a British Overseas Territory made up of over 40 islands and cays, renowned for its stunning turquoise waters, pristine white sandy beaches, and luxury resorts. While many New Yorkers often gravitate towards the Bahamas for vacations, Turks and Caicos remains a lesser-explored destination just 28 miles away.
This picturesque archipelago is divided into the Turks islands and the Caicos islands. Grand Turk, the capital and second most populated island, is part of the Turks group, while Providenciales, the most developed island in the Caicos group, serves as the hub of tourism, offering world-class beaches, luxury accommodations, and exquisite dining options.
Turks and Caicos boasts a more tranquil and exclusive atmosphere compared to the bustling Bahamas, making it a favored retreat for celebrities. High-profile residents such as Oprah Winfrey, the Kardashians, and Bruce Willis have properties in the area, while stars like Justin and Hailey Bieber, Drake, and Beyoncé frequently visit.
Traveling to Turks and Caicos takes approximately three-and-a-half hours via direct flights from New York. However, travelers from Los Angeles may need connecting flights. With recent developments including new hotels and residential properties under brands like St. Regis and Andaz, there are indications that direct flights may soon become available from various airlines.
During a recent visit, the author, alongside a sister, explored two popular resorts on Providenciales: Wymara and Amanyara. The journey commenced with breathtaking views of the iconic turquoise waters visible even before landing. October, although during hurricane season, offered a less crowded experience than the peak travel months from Thanksgiving to August. The duo enjoyed warm, sunny weather, apart from a few cloudy hours.
Wymara Resort + Villas, which was rebranded in 2019, left a lasting impression with its distinctive architecture. As guests enter, they are greeted by a striking infinity pool that seamlessly connects to the breathtaking Grace Bay Beach. Rated four stars by Forbes Travel Guide and recognized as Green Globe-certified, the resort features 97 modern accommodations equipped with luxury amenities.
The culinary experience at Wymara is particularly noteworthy, thanks to the influence of Australian chef Andrew Mirosch, who has spearheaded the menu centered on sustainable seafood. The hotel’s top-rated restaurants include Indigo, known for its Caribbean fusion cuisine, Blue Water Bistro for beachside delights, and Pink Bar for cocktails and light fare.
A short shuttle ride away is the Wymara Villas + Beach Club, which includes residences and the new Land + Sea restaurant, celebrated for its scenic ocean views and fresh seafood offerings.
For a more adventurous experience, the sisters ventured to Amanyara, located on a pristine stretch of the northwest coast. Nestled within an 18-acre nature reserve, this Aman property reflects a commitment to peace and nature, offering a tranquil escape.
With just 38 pavilions and 20 villas, Amanyara emphasizes seclusion and luxury, featuring unique designs that harmonize with the natural landscape. The resort’s amenities include an expansive pool and proximity to Northwest Point Marine National Park, which is renowned for exceptional diving experiences.
The dining options at Amanyara are impressive, with a focus on wellness and culinary excellence. Guests can enjoy various dining experiences, from Asian-themed dishes to Mediterranean-inspired meals. A host of wellness facilities, including a spa and fitness center, further enhances the allure of the property.
While some islands in the Caribbean are known for their nightlife and shopping, Turks and Caicos appeals to those seeking relaxation and privacy. The tranquil environment is ideal for unwinding, with many guests preferring to stay on the resort grounds to take advantage of luxurious accommodations and wellness offerings.
