Costume Designer Molly Rogers Gives a Glimpse into the Fashion of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’
Costume Designer Molly Rogers Takes the Reins in The Devil Wears Prada 2
Costume designer Molly Rogers, known for her collaboration with the esteemed Patricia Field on projects such as Sex and the City, Ugly Betty, and The Devil Wears Prada, is venturing into solo territory for the highly anticipated sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, set to hit theaters on May 1. Rogers aims to infuse a fresh perspective into the fashion realm while honoring the iconic style established in the original film.
Rogers highlights distinctive pieces, including Miranda Priestly’s bespoke Balenciaga gown, as a standout costume, alongside a striking chainmail dress by Rabanne. Over 100 outfits were carefully sourced for principal characters, underscoring Rogers’s commitment to authenticity and character depth.
In a recent interview with Us Weekly, Rogers discussed the challenges of blending the original film’s iconic aesthetic with new elements. She emphasized the importance of selecting timeless silhouettes that reflect the characters’ evolution over time.
Reflecting on her creative process, Rogers stated, "It was important to me to bring forward the costume philosophy from the original movie that Pat established." She aimed to portray Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, as a formidable leader, alongside characters like Andrea Sachs, portrayed by Anne Hathaway, who embodies the characteristic New York spirit.
Rogers noted that costume design is integral to character development, particularly for Andrea, now a seasoned reporter whose style evolves through her experiences. "Her vintage Coach messenger bag is a perfect accessory; believable as a work bag for a reporter but with a touch of panache," she said.
Collaboration with the cast has played a vital role in the design process. "Meryl gave me so much time… she was super-engaged in the process," Rogers remarked, appreciating the input from seasoned actors like Hathaway and Emily Blunt. Their ideas shaped the costumes significantly.
Regarding callbacks to the original film, Rogers explained her hesitance to replicate certain iconic moments. "Chanel asked if I wanted the thigh boots back, but you really can’t go near that scene. It is so ingrained in culture; it’s best served left alone," she stated, also expressing her desire to include the beloved cerulean blue sweater.
Looking ahead to the film’s release, Rogers indicated that certain looks are bound to leave a lasting impression on fans. Among these, she mentioned Miranda’s beautifully lit walk through Milan as a particularly enchanting moment.
As for Andrea’s character arc, Rogers remarked on the evolution of her style. "In this one, she hasn’t rejected that world but has re-entered it with a more mature sense of what she can bring to it," reflecting her growth as a character.
Rogers shared insights into how Miranda’s wardrobe would reflect her authority. "Her wardrobe needed to exude confidence and ease," highlighting the balance between maintaining a commanding presence and showcasing a softer aesthetic.
Emily’s style is set to remain edgy and fashion-forward, with Rogers mixing designer labels from the original film with bolder choices. "She’s a risk-taker and is out for herself," Rogers said as she described the character’s fashion evolution.
In a rapid-fire segment, Rogers chose Miranda’s Balenciaga gown as the best-dressed look, while emphasizing that Miranda Priestly continues to hold the fashion power in this sequel. As the excitement builds for The Devil Wears Prada 2, fans of the original can look forward to witnessing how these beloved characters have evolved in both their roles and their wardrobes.
