Conversations from Berlin’s EFM DocSalon with Filmmakers Anna Fitch, Banker White, and Mark Cousins on the Doc Talk Podcast
Documentary Filmmakers Reflect on Friendship and Legacy
Filmmakers Anna Fitch and Banker White have dedicated 16 years to their documentary Yo (Love Is a Rebellious Bird), which offers a heartfelt tribute to Fitch’s late friend, Yolando Shea—referred to affectionately as "Yo."
The two shared a nearly 50-year age gap, yet their bond was profound. Following Shea’s passing, Fitch struggled with the loss to the extent that she created a one-third scale replica of Shea’s home in Pacific Grove, California, complete with a doll that resembles her friend.
In a recent interview on the Doc Talk podcast, the directors discussed the unexpected challenges they faced during the filmmaking process, including an intriguing foray into bug wrangling. They also revealed a poignant request from Shea before her death, which shaped their approach to a specific scene in the film.
The podcast features an additional segment with acclaimed director Mark Cousins, known for his extensive exploration of documentary cinema in The Story of Documentary Film. In his insightful discussion, Cousins highlights the contributions of influential figures like the Lumière Brothers and Leni Riefenstahl, as well as lesser-known innovators like Ella Bergmann-Michel. Cousins candidly expressed his frustration with the documentary Melania, directed by Brett Ratner, stating it left him "incandescent with rage."
Cousins, recognized for his deep understanding of nonfiction filmmaking, articulated his belief that “documentary kills fascism,” a message that resonates particularly in today’s climate. The episode also honors the legacy of renowned documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman, who recently passed away.
Furthermore, the hosts, John Ridley and Matt Carey, discussed a potential rule change at the Academy Awards that could significantly affect the outcomes for the Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Short categories.
