Clippers’ Season Ends with Play-in Loss to Warriors: A Look at Steph Curry’s Impact
Clippers’ Season Ends with Narrow Loss to Warriors
In a crucial playoff showdown on Wednesday night at the Intuit Dome, the Los Angeles Clippers fell short against the Golden State Warriors, losing 126-121. The defeat marked the end of the Clippers’ season after they squandered a 13-point lead early in the fourth quarter.
Despite a challenging start to the season that saw them post a franchise-worst 6-21 record, the Clippers climbed back to secure a spot in the NBA play-in tournament. Under the leadership of Coach Ty Lue, the team demonstrated resilience but was unable to extend their journey on their home court.
Stephen Curry led the Warriors with an impressive 35 points, supported by Kristaps Porzingis and Gui Santos, who each contributed 20 points, and Brandin Podziemski with 17. The Warriors exhibited strong perimeter shooting, connecting on 19 of 41 attempts from beyond the arc.
For the Clippers, Bennedict Mathurin scored 23 points, while Kawhi Leonard and Darius Garland each added 21. The Clippers had previously dominated the regular season matchups against the Warriors, winning three out of four games, including a victory just four days prior.
The game started positively for the Clippers, who scored 12 consecutive points to gain a 10-point lead just over three minutes into the contest. However, the Warriors countered with a 12-2 run, shifting momentum and briefly taking the lead on a Curry three-pointer. The Clippers regained their footing, finishing the first quarter ahead 31-22.
As the second quarter unfolded, Porzingis put the Warriors ahead with a three-pointer early on. Yet, the Clippers responded strongly before halftime, boosted by a technical foul assessed to Draymond Green, which Leonard converted into a free throw, sending the teams to the locker room with the Clippers ahead 61-53.
During the third quarter, the Clippers extended their lead to 10 points, only to see the Warriors inch closer thanks to a rare four-point play by Curry. As the game progressed, the Clippers managed to hold a slight edge, heading into the fourth with a 89-83 advantage.
In the final minutes, the lead fluctuated dramatically. A three-pointer from Porzingis narrowed the gap to three, but Garland quickly pushed it back to eight. With under two minutes remaining, Al Horford’s three-pointer provided the Warriors with a 117-115 lead. Lopez tied the game with free throws, but Curry responded with a critical three-pointer, putting Golden State ahead 120-117 with just 50 seconds left. The Warriors would hang on for the win.
As a result of this victory, the Warriors will prepare for a Friday night matchup against the Phoenix Suns to compete for the eighth and final playoff seed in the Western Conference. The Suns, having lost to Portland recently, will be looking to secure their position against Golden State on the road before facing the top-seeded Oklahoma City in a best-of-seven series.
