Channel 4 Drama ‘Up to No Good’ Expands Cast with Notable Additions
Channel 4’s highly anticipated drama Up to No Good has officially expanded its cast, adding notable talents Claudia Jessie, Penelope Wilton, and Meera Syal to join Glenn Close in leading roles.
Previously titled Maud, the series is currently filming in London and is based on short story collections by Swedish author Helene Tursten. The narrative centers on Maud Oldcastle, an elderly killer with a tumultuous past. Determined to forge a new path away from a life spent caring for her sister, Maud confronts various challenges, including a suspicious detective and societal pressures that favor youth, as she strives to protect her newfound freedom.
Claudia Jessie, known for her role as Eloise Bridgerton in the popular Netflix series Bridgerton, plays Hannah, the detective investigating a death in Maud’s building. Wilton portrays Charlotte, while Syal takes on the role of Margaret. Additional cast members include Gloria Obianyo (Andor), Anita Dobson (Doctor Who), and Ben Crompton (Game of Thrones).
Lee Haven Jones, recognized for directing A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis Story, will helm the project, with scripts written by Nina Raine and Moses Raine, who previously collaborated on Donkey Heart.
Up to No Good is produced by Playground, known for the acclaimed series Wolf Hall, and is currently being shopped by Sony Pictures Television. Andrew Plotkin of Sony expressed enthusiasm about Haven Jones’s direction, emphasizing his immersive approach throughout production. He stated, "With a standout cast joining Glenn to bring Nina and Moses’ brilliantly crafted scripts to life, their collaboration further elevates the storytelling at the heart."
The series was commissioned for Channel 4 by Gwawr Lloyd, Acting Head of Drama, and Rebecca Holdsworth. Executive producers include Scott Huff and Colin Callender for Playground, along with Close, Haven Jones, Nina Raine, and Moses Raine, while Morenike Williams, known for Killing Eve, serves as the series producer.
Close’s involvement adds to the trend of high-profile actors participating in Channel 4 dramas, joining the ranks of Gillian Anderson, Paapa Essiedu, and Keeley Hawes.
