Christmas Weather Woes: Rainy Days Ahead for SoCal Next Week
System from Pacific Northwest May Bring Rain to Southern California for Christmas
As holiday shoppers prepare for last-minute gifts and families finalize their plans for the upcoming festivities, meteorologists are monitoring the development of a weather system that could influence Christmas celebrations across Southern California.
Meteorologist Melissa Magee warned that a jet stream above the region is expected to shift, potentially introducing moisture to the area. “As we head into our weekend, we’ve got more clouds around here in Southern California. There’s a little stream of moisture; this is an atmospheric river that we’re tracking as we head into next week,” Magee explained. She indicated that the most significant impacts could be felt on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
The incoming system, originating from the Pacific Northwest, is expected to journey southward. “There is a system on the way,” Magee stated. “This is going to be a milder system, so it’s mostly rain. Not a whole lot of snow with this because we’re tapping into a bit of an atmospheric river.”
Long-range forecasts suggest that the storm could materialize during the holiday week, although precise predictions remain elusive at this stage. “So Tuesday into Wednesday—that’s Christmas Eve—into Christmas Day, we’ve got the potential for some showers," Magee noted. "Again, we have to fine-tune the timing and the exact intensity of the moisture that will be on the way as we tap into the atmospheric river for the first time this winter season, which begins on Sunday.”
Meteorologists will continue to monitor the situation closely as the holiday approaches.
