Chappell Roan’s Makeup Artist Shares the Surprising Tool Behind Her Grammy Nipple Piercings

Pop artist Chappell Roan made headlines for her striking appearance at the Grammy Awards, captivating audiences with a gravity-defying Mugler dress adorned with faux nipple rings. The innovative design sparked curiosity over how Roan’s styling team achieved the eye-catching look while maintaining modesty.
Makeup artist and prosthetics expert Sasha Glasser shed light on the process in an interview with Allure, revealing that the nipple rings were attached to special-grade prosthetic coverings custom-painted to match Roan’s skin tone. “The idea was for her to not be so naked,” Glasser explained, emphasizing the intention behind the daring design.
To ensure the coverings could support the weight of the rings and fabric, the styling team layered a stretchy nude mesh over the prosthetics. Before painting the rings, Glasser noted they used gum wrappers to protect the rings during initial adjustments, explaining, “Genesis and I tested it. We’d put the ring in the prosthetic and tug, and it would rip out, so that was scary.”
Ultimately, the team succeeded, and the final look garnered significant attention. An Instagram video from Billboard featuring Roan’s outfit attracted over 50 million views in just 24 hours.
Following the red carpet event, Roan addressed the discourse surrounding her outfit on Instagram, sharing her thoughts alongside images of her look. “Giggling because I don’t even think this is THAT outrageous of an outfit,” she wrote, adding that the ensemble was “awesome and weird.”
Roan expressed her enthusiasm, encouraging others to embrace their individuality. “I recommend just exercising your free will — it’s really fun and silly … Thank you for having me @grammys and those who voted for me!!”
After the awards show, Roan changed into a cream-colored dress to present the Best New Artist Award, which she won in 2025. This year’s award went to Olivia Dean.
