Chappell Roan initially honored Brigitte Bardot on her Instagram Story after the renowned actress’s passing, but soon expressed regret over Bardot’s political affiliations.
Bardot died on December 28, 2023, at the age of 91. Roan shared a heartfelt message with a photo of Bardot, stating, "Rest in peace Ms. Bardot. She was my inspiration for red wine supernova."
In her song “Red Wine Supernova,” Roan mentions Bardot in the lyrics: "She was a playboy, Brigitte Bardot / She showed me things I didn’t know."
However, a day later, on December 29, Roan returned to Instagram to clarify her stance after discovering Bardot’s controversial political beliefs. "Holy s— I did not know all that insane s— Ms. Bardot stood for obvs I do not condone this. Very disappointing to learn," she wrote.
Bardot’s influence as a major figure in French cinema is overshadowed by her contentious legacy. Initially celebrated for her roles in films like And God Created Woman, Bardot later shifted focus to activism, primarily advocating for animal rights. Nonetheless, her views on various societal issues have attracted significant backlash.
In 1992, Bardot married Bernard d’Ormale, known for his racially charged statements and political controversies. She faced legal repercussions for her remarks on immigration, including a fine imposed by a French court after publishing statements deemed inciting racial hatred in her 1999 book, Le Carre de Pluton. Her commentary on LGBTQ+ issues and criticism of the #MeToo movement further solidified her controversial public image.
Conversely, Roan has been a staunch advocate for women’s rights and the LGBTQ+ community throughout her career. Earlier this year, she launched The Midwest Princess Project, aimed at uplifting trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities through actionable support and connection.
