Changes in the Virgin River Cast: Who’s Leaving and Who’s Coming Back for Season 8?
SPOILER ALERT: This report includes details about Season 7 of Netflix’s Virgin River.
Mike Valenzuela, portrayed by Marco Grazzini, has concluded his arc in the series, stepping down after the seventh season of the romantic drama. Grazzini, who became a series regular in Season 3, has been a part of the show since its inception.
Joining him in exiting the series is Lauren Hammersley, who has portrayed Charmaine throughout the show’s run. While both actors will not return for the next season, showrunner Gabrielle Smith mentioned that they could reprise their roles in future projects.
These departures match the total of series regular exits from the first six seasons, which included Grayson Gurnsey (Ricky) after Season 4 and Mark Ghanimé (Dr. Cameron) after Season 6. Jenny Cooper, who plays Mel’s sister Joey, will continue to appear in a recurring capacity after her series regular role in Season 1.
Since Smith took over as showrunner after Season 4, the cast of Virgin River has shown stability, with only Kandyse McClure, who joined in Season 5, becoming a series regular. Smith has confirmed that no new series regular promotions are planned for Season 8.
Smith noted that while cast changes can help rejuvenate long-running series, he aims to preserve the existing characters’ longevity. “For me, I’m just trying to look to the longevity of the show and making sure that the characters that we’re keeping have enough story engine in them to keep going,” Smith said. He indicated that while there are no specific changes planned, future character developments may necessitate introducing new characters.
Aside from Grazzini, the rest of the Season 7 cast is expected to return for Season 8, including Ben Hollingsworth, whose character Brady faced a shocking incident in the Season 7 finale.
Mike Valenzuela was first introduced as a recurring character in Season 2. Following his promotion to series regular, his storyline included a romantic development with Brie (Zibby Allen). Their relationship shifted precariously in Season 6, and by Season 7, Mike was seen beginning to establish a connection with Victoria (Sara Canning).
“Mike probably will be on the back burner for a little while until we have something we’ve written,” Smith said. He expressed a desire to explore a deeper storyline with Mike but acknowledged the need to balance ongoing narratives.
Canning, having joined as a recurring character in Season 7, is also departing alongside Grazzini. Additionally, new recurring cast member Cody Kearsley (Clay) is expected to return in the next season, while Matty Finochio’s role as Tony will be subject to availability due to other commitments.
From the storyline involving Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack’s adoption journey, Rachel Drance, who played Marley, will not return in Season 8. However, Austin Nichols, who made a cameo at the end of Season 7 as Eli, is expected to recur, pending scheduling adjustments.
Charmaine has played a pivotal role in numerous season finales, contributing to key plot twists throughout the series. Although absent for most of Season 7, she was rescued by Brie after a dramatic storyline involving her abduction. Smith remarked on Charmaine’s arc, stating, “No plans for Charmaine to be back in Season 8, but that’s not to say, when the right time comes, I’d love to bring the character back for something other than more cliffhangers and more lies on pregnancies.”
