Celebrating Mother’s Day: Matthew Torres and Chris Fields Honor Their Moms
On Mother’s Day, Two Single Moms Celebrate Their Sons’ Athletic Journeys
As Mother’s Day approaches, the spotlight shines on two remarkable single mothers who have steadfastly supported their sports-playing sons. Their dedication through both struggles and triumphs exemplifies the profound impact of a mother’s love.
In Sylmar, pitcher Matthew Torres has navigated life without his father since his parents’ separation when he was just 12 years old. “He’s not been to any high school games,” Torres shared, highlighting the absence that has marked his journey.
Standing by his side is his mother, Roxanne. As a mother of five, she has embraced multitasking and has immersed herself in her children’s sports activities. "Her bringing me to church and getting to know God has made me the man I am today,” remarked the 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior.
Torres has risen to prominence this season, earning the title of the No. 1 pitcher in the Valley Mission League with an impressive 8-0 record and a batting average of .488. His contributions were essential in helping Sylmar clinch the league title and secure the No. 1 seed for the City Section Division I playoffs. In a sweet gesture planned for Sunday, he intends to surprise his mother in celebration of her support.
Meanwhile, All-City quarterback Chris Fields of Carson High has a mother, Shere Fletcher, who has fully embraced the world of football. Her commitment to learning the sport underscores her dedication to being present for her son. Reflecting on their challenging past, Fields noted, “We were impoverished.” Fletcher worked multiple jobs and pursued her education while sacrificing for her children’s future. Now a paralegal, she has become a constant presence at Fields’ practices and games, earning the honorary title of “Coach Fletcher,” although she prefers simply being called mom.
For Mother’s Day, Fields has planned a special gift for Fletcher, including a vintage Jerry Rice jersey from her favorite team, the 49ers, along with a trip to Santa Anita.
Throughout the sports community, countless mothers have devoted hours driving, feeding, and motivating their children through various challenges and victories.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the dedicated moms who make a difference in the lives of their young athletes.
