Carol Kirkwood Bids Farewell After Nearly 30 Years with BBC Weather
One of the UK’s most prominent weather presenters, Carol Kirkwood, is set to leave the BBC after nearly 30 years with the organization.
Kirkwood announced that she will officially step down in April. Known for her engaging presence, she has become a household name on BBC television.
After receiving her meteorological training at The Weather Channel, Kirkwood joined the BBC in 1998. She initially worked for BBC News, later expanding her roles to include appearances on BBC One and various other BBC platforms.
Her popularity surged in 2010 when she became the lead weather presenter on the flagship program BBC Breakfast. This role has enabled her to develop a strong rapport with fellow presenters and attract millions of viewers daily.
Kirkwood is known for her regular outside broadcasts at events such as the Chelsea Flower Show, Royal Ascot, and various royal occasions. She has also provided weather forecasts for significant sporting events, including Wimbledon and major golf tournaments in the UK.
Jonathan Munro, the interim head of BBC News, commended Kirkwood’s “exceptional” contributions to both BBC News and BBC Weather. “From major national moments to the everyday forecasts that are such an important part of our audiences’ lives, she has set the gold standard for our accurate, valued journalism—always delivered with an appropriately sunny outlook,” he stated. “She will be greatly missed by teams across the BBC. We wish her all the best for the future.”
In her farewell message, Kirkwood expressed her gratitude, stating, “It’s been an absolute privilege to bring you the weather every day. My job is something I’ve never taken for granted, and I’ve loved every minute! From early starts and all manner of forecasts, I’ve shared this journey with incredible colleagues at BBC Breakfast, BBC Weather, and programs across the BBC. I’d like to thank them for their support and friendship, which has meant the world.”
She also thanked her viewers, adding, “To those watching and listening at home—thank you for all the kindness you have shown me over the years; being part of your mornings has been a joy. This hasn’t been an easy decision to make, but it feels like the right moment to step away. I’ll carry with me the most wonderful memories.”
