Buffalo 8 Distribution Acquires Documentary on Vanilla Ice
Buffalo 8 Distribution has secured the rights to the feature documentary Ice Ice Baby – Hip Hop’s 1st Global #1, with plans to introduce the film to potential buyers at the upcoming Cannes Market.
The documentary delves into the unique and often misunderstood career of Rob Van Winkle, better known as Vanilla Ice. It chronicles the remarkable rise of his iconic single “Ice Ice Baby,” which made history as the first hip-hop track to ascend to number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Featuring insightful interviews, the film includes contributions from industry figures such as Monte Lipman, Chairman and CEO of Republic Records; Daniel Glass, Founder of Glassnote Records; and Charles Koppelman, CEO of CAK Entertainment. In addition, the documentary features commentary from Vanilla Ice’s contemporaries, including Vincent “Vin Rock” Brown of Naughty by Nature and Christopher “Kid” Reid of Kid ‘n Play, as well as MTV Veejay Downtown Julie Brown. Other contributors include Tommy Quon, Vanilla Ice’s manager, and several members of the Van Winkle family.
Directed and produced by Frank Licari and Hele Murphy, the film has additional executive production from Khoa Le, CEO of Kvibe Productions. It was filmed across various locations, including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Nassau, and Miami.
“This is exactly the kind of project Buffalo 8 looks to champion — culturally significant, emotionally resonant, and built for a global audience,” remarked Nikki Stier Justice, Head of Distribution at Buffalo 8. She added, “The film speaks to music fans, cultural historians, and anyone interested in how moments of disruption change industries and lives. We’re excited to support its worldwide release.”
