Bronny James Finds His Rhythm in the Lakers Playoffs
HOUSTON — The Los Angeles Lakers secured a commanding 3-0 lead over the Houston Rockets in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs, with LeBron James showcasing a remarkable performance while sharing special moments with his son, Bronny James.
After the Lakers triumphed 112-108 against the Rockets, LeBron reflected on the significance of the occasion. “All those moments have been with Bronny. It keeps getting better and better. It’s like ‘wow,’” he said.
Bronny made his playoff debut memorable by scoring his first postseason points during a dynamic stretch where he hit a three-pointer off a screen set by LeBron, followed by a reverse layup that marked the NBA’s first father-son postseason alley-oop. The Lakers can clinch the series on Sunday at the Toyota Center.
Amid the absence of key players Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, the Lakers have prioritized transition offense. Following a block by Deandre Ayton in the second quarter, LeBron quickly pushed the ball up the court, sharing a moment with Bronny as they raced towards the basket.
“It’s what I always wanted,” Bronny reflected on the opportunity to connect with his father again during a game, noting it had been since last year’s training camp since they last shared such a moment.
Speaking about his first playoff points, he emphasized the importance of confidence going forward. “Especially a playoff game, the first playoff bucket is great for me, great for my confidence and how I approach the rest of the playoffs,” he stated.
Bronny, who earned his first postseason rotation minutes in Game 1, faced early nerves but has steadily found his footing. LeBron recalled his own anxiety during his inaugural playoff game in 2006. “I was nervous for my first playoff game, too,” Bronny said. “I definitely think I’ve gained a little more confidence and relaxed myself over these three games.”
The Lakers will lean on Bronny’s contributions as they await the return of Doncic and Reaves. Lakers head coach JJ Redick highlighted the need for all available players to take advantage of scoring opportunities. “The amount of confidence that a young kid in our league can get from a postseason game is like — a regular-season game would never,” stated LeBron, acknowledging the boost such experiences can give to players early in their careers.
Bronny has also impressed defensively, with Redick noting significant improvements throughout the season. His ability to compete against a physically demanding Rockets team suggests a growing prowess that LeBron admires. “I marvel at his attention to detail, improvements on the ball, and defensive mindset,” he remarked.
This playoff journey holds special meaning for Bronny, who missed out on a planned March Madness appearance due to health issues. However, he is finding fulfillment on this stage. “I got to do it in the playoffs, and that’s just the best feeling,” he shared.
