Brentwood Scores a Strong Comeback Win Against Windward in Prep Basketball Action
Brentwood Eagles Bounce Back with Victory Over Windward
Last week’s disheartening 16-point defeat to Crossroads weighed heavily on the Brentwood players and coaching staff as they entered their Gold Coast League opener. The loss was particularly frustrating, considering that former Brentwood standout Shalen Sheppard was instrumental in that win for Crossroads.
“I was mad,” admitted Brentwood center Ethan Hill.
However, the Eagles redeemed themselves in a road game against Windward, securing a 68-60 victory on Tuesday. Augie Sugarman led the team with five three-pointers, contributing 17 points. Hill showcased his strength, scoring 18 points on nine-of-thirteen shooting. Ryan Howard and AJ Okoh each added 12 points.
Hill’s performance was particularly noteworthy. “Ethan Hill is a load. Brentwood by nine,” tweeted Eric Sondheimer.
This victory improved Brentwood’s record to 19-2. Head Coach Ryan Bailey suggested that the team may have entered the previous game against Crossroads with an overconfidence that contributed to their loss. Against Windward, the Eagles effectively contained standout player Davey Harris, who managed 19 points. Although Asher Haloossim excelled early, hitting four three-pointers in the first quarter and finishing with 18 points, the Wildcats (15-7, 1-1) struggled beyond that.
“This is a huge bounce-back win,” Hill reflected. “We learned a lot.”
In other recent basketball action, St. John Bosco defeated Mater Dei 85-64, with Christian Collins netting 23 points and Gavin Dean-Moss contributing 17 points, as the Braves improved to 2-0 in the Trinity League. Harvard-Westlake secured an 87-52 victory against Bishop Alemany, thanks in part to Joe Sterling’s 25 points and Barron Linnekins’ double-double.
The day also featured close contests, with St. Francis edging Crespi 66-64 and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame overpowering Chaminade 101-71, fueled by Zach White’s impressive 30-point performance.
Sierra Canyon continued its strong season with an 84-57 win over Loyola, led by Brandon McCoy’s 21 points. Other notable results included La Mirada’s 99-86 win against Weston Ranch and Oak Park’s 63-57 victory over Moorpark, improving their league record to 3-0.
In girls’ basketball, Brentwood triumphed over Windward 74-55, making 15 three-pointers for just their second win at Windward during Coach Charles Solomon’s 16 seasons at the helm. Jessica Liu scored 18 points, while Mikaella Kawahito added 16. Charis Rainey led Windward with 22 points.
