Braun Levi Faces Charges for the Tragic Death of California Teen Tennis Star
Torrance, Calif. – Suspect Arraignment in Fatal DUI Incident Involving High School Athlete
Today, Jenia Resha Belt, 33, is scheduled to be arraigned in Torrance on felony murder charges stemming from a tragic accident that claimed the life of 18-year-old Braun Levi, a standout high school tennis player. The accident occurred in May 2025, when Levi was struck by a vehicle allegedly driven by Belt while she was under the influence of alcohol.
According to prosecutors, Belt had a blood alcohol level of 0.19%, more than twice the legal limit, and was operating the vehicle with a suspended license at the time of the incident. She faces multiple charges, including murder, and is currently being held on a $2 million bail. If convicted, Belt faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison.
The incident unfolded around 12:46 a.m. on May 4, 2025, when Levi was crossing Sepulveda Boulevard at the intersection of Rhonda Drive in Manhattan Beach. Investigators reported that he was struck by a silver Infiniti FX35 driven by Belt and later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman expressed his condolences, stating, "This case represents an unimaginable loss — not only for Braun Levi’s family, but for his school, his teammates and an entire community that watched a remarkable young man build a bright future." Hochman emphasized that driving under the influence is a serious offense that demonstrates a profound disregard for human life.
Levi was a celebrated senior at Loyola High School and was on track for a promising collegiate tennis career at the University of Virginia. His passing has ignited a community movement advocating for DUI sentencing reform, spearheaded by his mother, Jennifer Levi, who serves on the board of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in California.
