Black Sands’ Second and Final Season Is Coming to Viaplay in the U.S.
Second and Final Season of Black Sands Set to Premiere on Viaplay
The popular Icelandic crime drama Black Sands is returning for a second and final season on the Viaplay Streaming Service in the United States. The first season received critical acclaim, garnering numerous nominations and positive reviews from the English-language media. Season 2 is set to launch on May 14, featuring two episodes released weekly as part of the eight-part series.
In addition to the announcement of the new season, a trailer has been unveiled, offering a glimpse of the upcoming storylines.
The series continues to explore the haunting landscape of Iceland’s black sands, following protagonist Anita, played by Aldis Amah Hamilton, who also co-writes the series. Season 1 introduced viewers to Anita, a troubled police officer returning to her hometown to investigate a serial killer disguised as an accidental death.
“Maybe it’s time you knew the truth,” a voiceover intones as sweeping visuals of the black sands set the tone in the Season 2 trailer.
The narrative picks up fourteen months after the events of Season 1, plunging into a grim Arctic winter. New mysteries emerge, including the suspicious death of an elderly woman and another shocking murder. As Anita delves deeper into the investigation, the town’s dark history begins to surface.

Viaplay Content Distribution has acquired the SVOD rights for the U.S., Germany, and the UK, where Season 1 was previously available on UKTV. All3Media International oversees the distribution of the Icelandic-language series, which features English subtitles. The new season will also premiere in Germany on May 18.
