Pierce Brosnan Shares Thoughts on the Netflix-WBD Merger: “It Feels Unsettling and Not Quite Right”
Former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan has expressed significant concerns regarding the future of cinema in light of Netflix’s proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. In a recent interview with The Times in the U.K., Brosnan described the merger as "unsettling."
Brosnan emphasized the impact of a single dominant entity on the diversity of cinematic offerings, stating, “To have one dominant force that colors what we see, how we see it and where we see it is a change that doesn’t feel culturally right.”
His remarks reflect a broader apprehension among industry veterans about the implications of such corporate consolidation. “I love cinema and I’ve seen cinemas evaporate from the landscape where I live in California, and here in London,” he added. Although Netflix has provided him with opportunities, Brosnan urged caution, questioning how talent can navigate this evolving landscape without becoming frustrated or disillusioned.
Brosnan, who is set to appear in the biographical boxing drama Giant, is not alone in his critique. Other prominent figures, including filmmakers James Cameron and Jane Fonda, have also voiced their opposition to the merger.
On December 5, Netflix announced its intention to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming assets for a reported $82.7 billion, resulting in a valuation of nearly $28 per share. Shortly after, Paramount Skydance made a hostile bid of $30 per share, prompting Warner Bros. Discovery to encourage shareholders to reject this proposal. As the company moves forward with Netflix’s offer, the future remains uncertain.
The potential merger has sparked widespread debate among entertainment leaders and political figures, with Senator Elizabeth Warren characterizing it as “a five-alarm antitrust fire and exactly what our anti-monopoly laws are written to prevent.” This collective concern underscores the growing pressure on corporate practices within the entertainment sector.
