Black Forest Studios Brings Thought-Provoking Psychological Horror ‘Path of the Lost’ to Cannes
EXCLUSIVE: Germany’s Black Forest Studios is making its presence known at the Cannes Film Festival this week, showcasing a psychological horror series and unveiling plans to become Europe’s first fully-integrated microdrama studio.
Path of the Lost has wrapped production, with creators describing it as a fusion of “the intensity of psychological thrillers with the accessibility and pacing of modern short-form entertainment — while maintaining a cinematic standard in directing, atmosphere, and production quality.”
The series follows five students embarking on a weekend getaway to Germany’s Black Forest, a trip that takes a chilling turn. Drawing inspiration from true events from 1936, it combines elements of psychological horror, mystery, and suspense.
In January, Black Forest Studios was featured in a profile on emerging international microdrama companies, where the company expressed ambitions to become the “Crazy Maple Studios” of Europe, referencing the influential Chinese microdrama house known for producing a high volume of content monthly.
Sebastian Weiland, CEO of Black Forest Studios and co-founder alongside his wife, writer Nina Gwyn Weiland, is at the Cannes Film Festival this week to introduce the studio to international audiences. The company boasts seven stages and 3,000 square meters of studio space, with post-production facilities and office space, and the recent focus on microdrama marks a strategic evolution.
“We see microdrama as one of the most exciting growth opportunities in the global entertainment landscape,” stated Sebastian Weiland. “With Black Forest Studios, we are building a fully integrated studio model — from development and production to distribution of premium microdrama content.”
To date, Black Forest Studios has produced microdrama series such as Black Forest Royale, Mountain Medical Klinik, and Dark Shades of the Outer Forest, all currently in production. Additionally, projects in pre-production include Guts, while titles like The Football Academy, Taurus, and Triple Trouble are in development.
Each series is infused with a European essence while utilizing the microdrama format that has gained traction in the U.S., Korea, and China.
