Bill Maher Reacts to Trump’s Truth Social Rant with Humor and Insight
Bill Maher Responds to Donald Trump’s Valentine’s Day Rant
Bill Maher has reacted to Donald Trump’s recent criticism following their public fallout, which was marked by a Valentine’s Day split. During an episode of Real Time, Maher addressed Trump’s dismissal of their March 2025 dinner, which the former president referred to as “a total waste of time.”
“I woke up Saturday morning to a blistering social media text from him,” Maher recounted. He explained that Trump was upset because Maher did not find humor in a joke involving Canada and hockey, suggesting they need to “workshop that one for a while.”
Maher continued, “So, he went off on me and said, ‘The dinner we had was a waste of time!’—well, I didn’t think it was—and that I’m a jerk, and that I’m a lightweight, and all this sh*t. Because I never stopped criticizing him.” He drew a parallel to how women might feel when a man buys dinner and expects more in return, stating, “I’m not that guy.”
Trump accused Maher of suffering from what he called “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” In response, Maher plans to address this assertion on his next show, aiming to disprove the claims.
“It’s so funny, because I got so much shit from the left for reporting honestly that in person, he was very different, very nice, very gracious,” Maher commented, adding that Trump suggested Maher was merely “scared.” He quipped, “I’m like the Democrats with an election, I just can’t win.”
Previously, Maher had defended his decision to dine with Trump at the White House alongside Kid Rock, believing it preferable to throwing insults from a distance. However, after Trump’s recent remarks, he faced renewed scrutiny, as the former president declared last weekend that allowing Maher into the White House was “a total waste of time.”
