Bette Midler Joins Netflix’s New Cinderella as the Fairy Godmother
Bette Midler is set to lend her voice to the fairy godmother in Netflix’s reimagined animated film, Steps, which marks the first fully in-house production from Netflix Animation Studios.
In Steps, Midler joins a talented cast that includes Ali Wong as Lilith, Amanda Seyfried voicing Cinderella, and Stephanie Hsu as Margot. The narrative focuses on Cinderella’s stepsister, Lilith, who steals the fairy godmother’s magic wand and disrupts the Royal Ball. This bold move leads to an unusual twist in the traditional Cinderella story, culminating in the rise of Priscilla, a villain who seizes the throne. In the face of chaos, Lilith must collaborate with Cinderella to restore order to the kingdom and mend their strained relationship.
Midler shared her enthusiasm for the role, saying, “The beloved Fairy Godmother, the wholesome Fairy Godmother, the one with all the good intentions, has been around for a long, long time. This particular version of the Fairy Godmother has good intentions, but she’s a little bit of a bumbler and she’s a little bit of a schemer. I’m thrilled to be part of this film.”
Steps is directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, with Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing producing. Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions is also involved in the project.
The film is expected to premiere later this year.
