Fans of Hulu’s Tell Me Lies can celebrate the premiere of the much-anticipated third season, which debuted unexpectedly with an added third episode on Monday night at 9 PM PT / midnight ET. This season promises an even darker and more twisted narrative than previous installments.

Grace Van Patten, who plays Lucy, described her character’s emotional journey, saying, “Lucy starts in deep denial, truly believing that things will be different this time, but quickly realizes that this is a vicious cycle. Any good does not last longer than a second.” She emphasized the tension between her character and Stephen, noting that their connection creates a pervasive panic that influences their relationships the entire season.

In a reflection of the series’ complex dynamics, Jackson White, portraying Stephen, indicated that both characters are grappling with their emotional burdens while striving for a sense of normalcy. “They’re trying to make it work with each other, but they’re both so damaged that all their demons come out,” he stated.

The first three episodes delve deep into Stephen’s manipulative tactics, beginning with Episode 1, titled “You F*cked it, Friend.” Here, Stephen confronts Lucy about her secret liaison with Evan, using their vulnerability to deepen his control over her. As the story progresses into Episode 3, “Repent,” he coerces Lucy into recording a confessional video, where she falsely admits to lying about a sexual assault to protect Pippa, who is genuinely a victim.

Van Patten and White, who share a real-life relationship, discussed the challenges of portraying intense scenes. White commented on their approach: “There’s no process. It’s just trust… You can’t fake it. You have to go in there and you have to f–king go dark.” Van Patten added a lighthearted touch, specifying the importance of a post-shoot “deep body scrub” to shed the heaviness of their roles.

As the season unfolds, Lucy’s struggles become increasingly tragic. Van Patten noted, “She’s just losing it… beginning to accept and desire bad treatment because she thinks that’s what she deserves.” Meanwhile, White argued that despite Stephen’s toxic behavior, he possesses a flawed sense of love for Lucy, saying, “People would disagree, but I know he has it.”

The narrative also brings tension to Stephen’s obsession with Lucy’s friendship with Bree, a character whose struggles are compounded by her relationship with Oliver, a professor embroiled in controversy. Oppenheimer revealed that Stephen’s fixation on Bree is drawn from real-life experiences of individuals who isolate their partners from friends.

Additionally, the storyline sees new developments for other characters, including Diana, who faces unexpected news, and Bree, who navigates her complex relationship with Wrigley, who is dealing with the grief of his brother’s death. This season highlights Wrigley’s softer side as he begins to critically assess Stephen’s actions.

As the show ventures deeper into its intricate plots, the blend of dark humor and intense drama continues to captivate its audience. New episodes of Tell Me Lies will be released weekly on Tuesdays, ensuring fans remain engaged until the season finale on February 24.
