Beckham Borquez of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame: Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame Athlete Beckham Borquez Hospitalized Following Hurdles Incident at Arcadia Invitational
Beckham Borquez, a student-athlete from Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, faced a challenging moment during the 110 high hurdles at the Arcadia Invitational on Saturday night. The young runner took a spill over one of the final hurdles, landing hard on the track.
Initially frustrated with himself for the fall, Borquez was visibly shaken, with skin scraped off his shoulder and pain radiating from his hip. After the incident, he took a moment to regroup on the infield turf as he awaited assistance from an athletic trainer. Track coach Joe McNab arrived first to support him, humorously recalling his pre-med studies in college. Shortly thereafter, Borquez was seen walking off to have his shoulder bandaged.
"I snapped a photo of him on the ground only to keep it as a reminder," noted an onlooker. "He’s going to be back winning races, just like getting back on a horse after falling off; it’s all part of the learning experience."
Borquez has previously recorded a time of 13.91 in the event and is considered a strong contender for the upcoming Mission League title on April 30, with aspirations for a Southern Section title thereafter. His resilience in the face of adversity was evident during this challenging moment.
"I’m pretty bruised," Borquez remarked the following morning, "but I’m coming back." After receiving treatment for his shoulder, he headed home to begin rehabilitation, aiming to return for an upcoming dual meet and the Mt. SAC Invitational this Saturday.
Reflecting on the race, Borquez shared, "That’s the first time I’ve fallen in the 110. It was tricky. I was moving fast, clipped the eighth hurdle, and lost my balance. That’s never happened to me before."
Despite the setback, Borquez remains optimistic about his recovery. "These next two weeks, I’ll be on my redemption," he stated, signaling his determination to bounce back stronger than before.
