New Video Released in Baldwin Park Shootout Case
Baldwin Park, Calif. – The Baldwin Park Police Department has released new bodycam footage from a tragic shootout on May 31, 2025, that resulted in the deaths of Officer Samuel Riveros and civilian Darius Wong.
Eduardo Roberto Medina Berumen, 22, has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with the incident, which also left another officer injured but alive. Investigators are still working to determine a motive and whether Medina Berumen may be connected to other crimes.
The fatal shooting occurred around 7:15 p.m. in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue, where officers were responding to reports of an individual armed with a rifle. Upon arrival, they found 43-year-old Darius Wong on the sidewalk with a fatal gunshot wound. According to reports, Wong had just parked his car and was en route to a family gathering when he was shot.
Following the initial incident, a gun battle broke out between law enforcement and Medina Berumen. Officer Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the department, was killed in the exchange, while a second officer received treatment for injuries sustained during the confrontation.
Family and community members have expressed deep sorrow over the loss. Wong’s brother described him as a “kind soul with so much more life ahead of him,” condemning the violence that led to his brother’s death.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department commended Officer Riveros for his bravery, stating, “Officer Riveros made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his community.” Baldwin Park Mayor Alejandra Avila emphasized the officers’ courage in responding to a dangerous situation without hesitation.
