Kimmel Addresses Trump’s Joke About His Own Death
In a striking turn of events, one day after Donald Trump criticized Jimmy Kimmel for a joke about his marriage, Kimmel responded by addressing similar remarks made by the former president. Trump’s comments came after Kimmel’s skit at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, in which he humorously remarked on the first lady’s appearance.
Kimmel’s skit featured an “alternative” monologue, incorporating archival clips that captured the reactions of Trump, his wife Melania, and others. During the performance, Kimmel quipped, “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”
Following an apparent assassination attempt aimed at Trump over the weekend, the president, first lady, and White House Press Secretary expressed their displeasure regarding Kimmel’s joke. Trump characterized the comment as a “call to violence,” asserting it was “far beyond the pale.”
During a subsequent monologue, Kimmel included a clip of Trump welcoming King Charles to the United States. In this clip, Trump reflected on his mother’s admiration for the king and referenced his parents’ impressive 63-year marriage. Turning to Melania during the address, Trump humorously said, “And uh excuse me if you don’t mind. That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling. I’m sorry. Just not going to work out that way.”
Back in the studio, Kimmel reacted with disbelief. “Wait a minute. Did he just make a joke about his death? My god. You should be fired for that,” he joked, adding, “Only Donald Trump would demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age and then a day later go out and make a joke about his own old age.”
