Ashley Judd is critically reflecting on her filmography, particularly her role in the 1995 movie Heat. In an interview with Vulture, she discussed the film’s representation of female characters, emphasizing her evolving perception as she and her partner revisit her past work.
“The depiction of women in this movie is not okay,” Judd stated, reiterating that she now assesses all her projects through a similar lens.
The 57-year-old actress expressed that her perspective on her roles has changed, especially regarding the representation of women and societal norms related to internalized misogyny.

Judd pointed out the troubling themes in cinema, stating, “Today, when people say, ‘Kiss the Girls is my favorite movie,’ I’m like, ‘Let’s talk about that,’ because male sexual violence and male torture of women is not entertainment, and that’s what that movie is about.”
She emphasized the need for deeper conversations about the implications of such themes, arguing against simply labeling the portrayals as “resilience” without addressing the underlying societal issues.
Despite the film’s contentious elements, Judd expressed her fondness for Heat, stating, “I’m glad, still, that I was a part of this movie, and I do think it’s iconic. It’s a reflection of reality, and reality is problematic.”
“To say the movie is problematic is not to put the responsibility and focus where it lies, which is with the reality of which it’s a reflection,” she added. “Observation and critique is what I’m offering.”
In her role as Charlene Shiherlis, Judd’s character is married to Chris Shiherlis, portrayed by Val Kilmer. She described their relationship as a “Romeo and Juliet, but the reverse.” In a poignant scene towards the film’s conclusion, she makes a pivotal choice not to betray Chris.
“I’m giving him freedom. I distanced ourselves from each other for this scene,” she explained about her collaboration with Kilmer, who passed away in April 2025. “Once Val and I finished the other scenes, we didn’t connect again, which may have, in its own way, contributed to the feeling of the finality of this moment, and the longing.”
