Angels Struggle on the Road Against the Guardians
Cleveland Guardians Secure 3-2 Victory Over Los Angeles Angels
CLEVELAND — Angel Martinez’s impressive homer and a striking performance from Cleveland’s pitching staff, which notched 13 strikeouts, propelled the Guardians to a narrow 3-2 win against the Angels on Tuesday night. This victory continues the Guardians’ dominance at home against Los Angeles, improving their record to 29-4 at Progressive Field since 2015.
Martinez, along with Patrick Bailey and Bryan Rocchio, contributed significantly to the Guardians’ scoring. Despite being outhit on two occasions during the series, Cleveland managed to clinch victories in both games thus far.
The Angels saw Vaughn Grissom hit a home run in the loss, exacerbating their road woes, which now see them at 8-17.
Cleveland starting pitcher Slade Cecconi delivered a strong outing, holding Los Angeles scoreless for four innings and striking out a season-high seven batters. Hunter Gaddis (1-1) added 1 1/3 innings of relief work, while Cade Smith secured his second four-out save of the season, bringing his overall save success rate to 12 out of 14 chances.
Martinez put the Guardians on the board in the third inning with his sixth home run, launching a shot into the right-field seats against Angels pitcher Walbert Ureña (1-4). In the fifth inning, Martinez nearly homered again, but right fielder Jo Adell made a leaping catch at the wall. Consequently, Daniel Schneeman advanced to third and later scored on Bailey’s groundout, extending Cleveland’s lead.
Los Angeles clawed back in the sixth inning with a triple from pinch-hitter Oswald Peraza followed by a sacrifice fly from Adell, making it a 2-1 game.
The Angels posed another threat in the seventh inning against Eric Sabrowski, who issued two walks but managed to strike out the side. Rocchio’s sacrifice fly in the seventh increased Cleveland’s lead to 3-1, only for Grissom’s subsequent homer in the eighth to narrow the gap back to one run.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt returned to the dugout after missing two games due to an upper respiratory issue.
In a somber announcement, the Guardians reported the passing of longtime public address announcer Bob Tayek, who had been the voice of Progressive Field since 1999 until health reasons led him to step away this season.
Looking ahead, the Angels will send left-hander Reid Detmers (1-3, 4.33 ERA) to the mound for the series finale, facing off against the Guardians’ left-hander Parker Messick (4-1, 2.30), who will be encountering the Angels for the first time.
