AMC Development News: ‘Bannerman’ Gets Writers Room, ‘Point Break’ Reboot Moving Forward, and ‘Grapes Of Wrath’ Welcomes a Co-Writer
AMC Global Media Announces Upcoming Series at 2026 Upfront
AMC Global Media has unveiled significant updates on three highly anticipated series from AMC Studios during its 2026 upfront presentation. Among these are Bannerman, Point Break, and the inaugural entry in the new anthology series, Great American Stories, featuring The Grapes of Wrath.
Bannerman
AMC Studios has initiated a writers room for Bannerman, a television adaptation based on the popular spy novels by bestselling author John Maxim. The project will air on AMC and AMC+, following the studio’s acquisition of the rights in January 2023.
Shane Black, known for Lethal Weapon, and Greg Nicotero, recognized for his work in The Walking Dead Universe, have been tapped to executive produce. Brian Witten will serve as co-executive producer, with Black also set to direct.
Craig Silverstein has been appointed as the creator and showrunner, overseeing the writers room. He has an extensive background in television, having previously worked on AMC’s Turn: Washington’s Spies and Pantheon, and most recently served as executive producer and co-showrunner of Percy Jackson and the Olympians for Disney+.
The Bannerman series chronicles the life of charismatic ex-spy John Bannerman, whose attempt to lead a quiet life in suburbia is disrupted as he is drawn back into the world he once left behind.
Point Break
The Point Break project, created by Dave Kalstein, is also making strides. Production for Season 1 is expected to commence in Australia later this year, with a target premiere date set for 2027. This series will take place 25 years after the conclusion of the original film, centering on a new heist crew linked to the notorious Ex-Presidents gang.
Great American Stories
Last year, AMC announced an anthology series titled Great American Stories, which will feature celebrated narratives from American literature, starting with The Grapes of Wrath, based on John Steinbeck’s iconic novel.
Rolin Jones was initially slated to adapt The Grapes of Wrath and collaborate with various creative talents for future seasons. Mark Johnson, who is overseeing AMC’s Anne Rice Immortal Universe, will also supervise the anthology series.
Jones, currently involved with AMC Studios’ upcoming series The Vampire Lestat, will co-write The Grapes of Wrath alongside Brett C. Leonard, known for Fear the Walking Dead. The executive production team will include Jill Gillette, along with Jones and Leonard.
Production for The Grapes of Wrath is projected to begin by the end of the year, aiming for a debut in 2027. According to AMC, Great American Stories will dedicate each season to a distinct celebrated work, historical moment, or narrative that highlights the American spirit.
