Alfred Molina’s New Role in ‘The Boroughs’: Facing the Unexpected in a Charming Retirement Community
Netflix Unveils New Series ‘The Boroughs’ with Intriguing Trailer
Netflix has released a new trailer for its upcoming series, The Boroughs, created by the Duffer Brothers. The trailer opens with a scenic drive along a New Mexico road, drawing viewers into what promises to be an engaging narrative.
The retirement community, known as The Boroughs, is introduced as "a special town just for grownups," according to Jena Malone’s character, Claire. Her remark addresses the apparent age disparity among residents, prompting Alfred Molina’s character, Sam Cooper, to respond with a cheerful “Yippie.”
Kayleigh, a tour guide played by Beth Bailey, reassures Sam, saying, “Mr. Cooper, you’ll find The Boroughs is not a last chapter. It’s a new beginning.” However, Sam’s first experiences are less than welcoming; he quickly ejects Kayleigh from his new home.
Bill Pullman’s character, Jack, brings a sense of community to the festivities, stating, “The Boroughs is a good place. We take care of each other like a family.” However, he acknowledges the challenge of coping with the time left in their lives, as shown in a clip of Clarke Peters’ character, Art, enjoying a round of golf.
Denis O’Hare’s Wally expresses a desire for excitement, saying, “I want to fill it with nothing but cocktails and chaos.” The trailer then shifts tone with a glimpse of surreal imagery as a mysterious creature lurks near a television screen.
“I’ve started to see things,” Molina’s Sam confides to Alfre Woodard’s character, Judy. He admits to Wally that this revelation could be misconstrued as madness, a fear that weighs heavily on him as they prepare to face the unknown.
Alice Kremelberg, portraying Annaliese, aptly summarizes the enigma of The Boroughs, stating, “There are wonders in The Boroughs, tucked away, hidden, buried.” Wally suggests a pivotal choice: “We can give up. We can go all the way.”
Previously, on April 13, Netflix teased the series, which is set to premiere on May 21. The show centers around Sam Cooper’s journey as he transitions to The Boroughs, a paradise that quickly reveals its darker complexities. The logline hints that Sam’s unsettling encounters lead him to team up with an eclectic group of residents who uncover hidden dangers within their seemingly idyllic surroundings.
Molina’s character engages with other misfits, including Renee (Geena Davis), Art (Clarke Peters), Judy (Alfre Woodard), Jack (Bill Pullman), and Wally (Denis O’Hare). The narrative further explores their struggles against the oppressive atmosphere of the community, which is painted as both picturesque and perilous.
The series, driven by a whimsical score from composer John Paesono, intertwines elements reminiscent of classic fantastical stories, focusing on community, resilience, and the search for truth amidst chaos.
As the characters confront their fears and the unseen challenges ahead, the series promises a blend of humor, mystery, and adventure.
Photos of The Boroughs showcase an impressive cast, including Carlos Miranda as Paz, Seth Numrich as Blaine, and Ed Begley Jr. as Edward, among others, emphasizing the depth and diversity that the series aims to deliver.
Following the intermingling themes of aging, friendships, and the exploration of the unknown, The Boroughs is poised to captivate audiences when it streams on Netflix.
