Alexander Skarsgård Discusses Challenges of Playing a Good-hearted Character in Wicker
Alexander Skarsgård expressed feelings of intimidation regarding his role in the new fantasy romance film, Wicker, during a Q&A session following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24. The film features a star-studded cast, including Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debicki.
In his remarks at the premiere in Park City, Utah, Skarsgård, 49, explained, “I was quite intimidated when I read [the script] because I tend to be drawn toward more conflicted characters with more internal turmoil and darkness. And to play this good-hearted, good-natured, sweet, morally righteous character was scary to me.” He admitted that stepping into this role required him to extend his acting range in ways he was not comfortable with.
Skarsgård is well-known for his portrayal of complex characters, such as the troubled husband in HBO’s Big Little Lies and the ruthless tech mogul in Succession. His previous roles often explore darker themes, making his transition to a more whimsical character in Wicker particularly notable.
The narrative of Wicker unfolds in a medieval-inspired village infused with magical elements. It centers around a lonely woman played by Colman, who enlists the help of a local basket weaver, portrayed by Peter Dinklage, to create a husband made of wicker, with Skarsgård taking on that unique role.
The actor noted he was immediately captivated by the project and described it as “an incredible script,” highlighting its allegorical nature without being overly didactic. He elaborated, “It was so funny and sweet, and obviously a very interesting character to play.”
On set, however, he faced practical challenges, particularly with the wicker prosthetics that obscured much of his face, making him feel “ridiculous” at times. He acknowledged the need to amplify his performance, stating, “It was definitely a new, different experience for me.”

Skarsgård’s insights reflect not only the challenges of stepping outside his comfort zone but also the creativity involved in bringing a distinct character to life in a unique story environment. The whimsical tone of Wicker certainly marks a shift from his previous roles, promising a fresh take on Skarsgård’s impressive acting repertoire.
