Alex Vesia Steps Up for Dodgers in Close Win Against Mets After Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s Impressive Start
Dodgers Secure Victory Over Mets with Strong Pitching Performance
In a tightly contested matchup, the Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed over the New York Mets, clinching a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night. Left-handed reliever Alex Vesia took to the mound in the ninth inning, stepping in for closer Edwin Díaz, and managed to strike out the side, showcasing his skills under pressure.
With this win, the Dodgers not only secured at least one victory in the series but also positioned themselves for a potential sweep on Wednesday.
The game got off to an explosive start, with Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor launching a leadoff home run against Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto—the third pitch of the game. The Dodgers quickly responded, as right fielder Kyle Tucker walked and, following a double by Will Smith, Tucker scored on a grounder from Freddie Freeman that allowed him to slide home unchallenged.
Following the action-packed first inning, the game settled into a pitched battle, with neither Yamamoto nor Mets’ starter Nolan McLean giving up another hit until the fifth inning. McLean’s first stumble came when he issued a walk to Hyeseong Kim, though Kim was stranded at second base.
Yamamoto, having rebounded from the early home run, retired the next 20 batters before Bo Bichette broke the streak with a double in the seventh inning. Despite facing some adversity, Yamamoto managed to escape further trouble by striking out Francisco Alvarez.
The eighth inning saw a resurgence for the Mets as they finally broke through again. Carson Benge hit a single followed by Lindor’s grounder that achieved a base hit against the Dodgers’ defense. In response, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called on reliever Blake Treinen, who struck out Luis Robert Jr. with the bases occupied, avoiding a potential crisis.
As the bottom of the eighth unfolded, the Mets introduced left-handed reliever Brooks Raley. The Dodgers countered by having Miguel Rojas pinch-hit for Kim; Rojas drew a walk, and Santiago Espinal advanced him with a sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk to Shohei Ohtani set the stage for Tucker, who delivered a pivotal go-ahead single, ending his recent slump.
Overall, the match underscored the Dodgers’ resilience and pitching prowess, setting a promising tone as they look to complete the series with a sweep against the Mets.
