Alex Proyas Bringing the Story of Bahrain’s Legendary Leader to Life in New Biopic ‘The Hakim’
Alex Proyas to Direct Historic Epic ‘The Hakim’
Renowned filmmaker Alex Proyas, known for his work on I, Robot, The Crow, and Dark City, will helm the historical epic The Hakim. The film draws inspiration from the life of the late Bahraini leader Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, who guided the nation through a time of significant transformation from 1869 to 1932.
The Hakim is being developed, produced, and financed by PG Entertainment UK, which plans to film in multiple locations, including Bahrain and London. The screenplay is penned by Peter C. Nelson and Fahar Faizaan, both of whom are also producers for the project. Casting efforts are currently underway, led by Dan Hubbard.
The narrative centers on Shaikh Ali, who ascends to the throne at the young age of 19 after his father’s death. The story explores his challenges in uniting his family and nation amidst piracy, the decline of the pearling industry, natural disasters, and the discovery of oil that would revolutionize the region.
“What drew me to The Hakim was the opportunity to tell an epic story rooted in a part of the world whose history has rarely been explored at this scale,” Proyas remarked. He emphasized that the film will focus on themes of power, family, faith, survival, and transformation, illustrating a leader striving to maintain unity during turbulent times. Proyas added, “Bahrain offers an extraordinary cinematic canvas, and we are approaching this as a sweeping, immersive world of desert, sea, storms, palaces, pearl divers, and political intrigue.”
Co-producer Fahar Faizaan stated, “The Hakim is an ambitious and inspiring story that has never been told at this scale. It is the story of a leader navigating the most profound transformation in his nation’s history. Our ambition is to create a defining work of cinema, deeply rooted in Bahrain’s history yet universally relevant to the choices that shape nations and the responsibilities of leadership during times of change.”
Nelson added, “This unique production brings together leading studios and technical experts from across the world to help bring a thrilling chapter of Bahraini history to life in a story that is universally appealing and will resonate with audiences worldwide.”
