A Sneak Peek at Alicia Vikander and Wagner Moura in the Drama ‘The Last Day’ Featuring Victoria Pedretti and New Sales from WestEnd
Below is a first look at The Last Day, a forthcoming drama featuring acclaimed actors Wagner Moura and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, alongside Victoria Pedretti. The film marks a notable entry into the genre, with Moura known for his work in The Secret Agent and Vikander recognized for her role in The Danish Girl.
As the European Film Market approaches this week, WestEnd Films has secured international sales rights for this feature debut, which is both written and directed by artist Rachel Rose. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group represent the film in North America.
The Last Day draws inspiration from Virginia Woolf’s novel Mrs. Dalloway, presenting a narrative that unfolds over a single summer day in New York. The story intertwines the lives of two mothers: Julia, a writer grappling with creative stagnation and unresolved grief as her daughter approaches adolescence, and Taylor, a labor and delivery nurse facing her own postpartum crisis. An unexpected encounter between the two prompts Julia to reflect on her life and the possibility of rediscovering her identity.
Currently in post-production, the film is produced by Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler from Killer Films, along with David Kaplan, Lucie Elwes, and Rachel Rose. Maja Hoffmann and Lucas Hoffmann of Luma Projects serve as executive producers.
In a statement, Rose said, “Becoming a mother felt to me like a collision between a beginning and a threat, and I knew I needed to write from the existential tension of that contradiction. In Mrs. Dalloway, I was struck by how Virginia Woolf reveals Clarissa’s self-erasure not through overt drama, but through the texture of a single, ordinary day—errands, chance encounters—until something immense has shifted inside her. That structure became my guide.”
She added, “This film follows two mothers over the course of one day, using its mundane rhythms to explore what it feels like to lose one’s bearings, to experience rudderlessness, and to reckon with how far, and how subtly, motherhood can carry us away from ourselves.”
The film has been acquired under the WeLove label, WestEnd’s initiative aimed at promoting female-driven stories.
