Lauryn Hill’s children have been integral to both her personal life and professional journey throughout her career. The iconic artist gained initial fame with The Fugees and recorded her groundbreaking solo album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, while pregnant with her first child, Zion Marley.
The decision to have a child while at the pinnacle of her career sparked considerable discussion and became the subject of her song “To Zion.” Hill shared in a 1999 interview with Rock’s Backpages, "That song is about the revelation that my son was to me. I had always made decisions for other people, making everybody else happy, and once I had him that was really the first decision that was unpopular for me… And it was the best decision that I could have ever made because I’m the happiest and healthiest that I have ever been."
From the mid-1990s to the early 2010s, Hill was in a tumultuous relationship with Rohan Marley, the son of reggae legend Bob Marley. Together, they had five children: Zion, born in 1997; Selah, born in 1998; Joshua, born in 2001; John, born in 2003; and Sara, born in 2008. Hill later welcomed her son Micah in 2011.
Before her relationship with Hill, Rohan was married to Geraldine Khawly, with whom he had a daughter and a son. Hill maintains a close relationship with Rohan’s children, frequently sharing photos and heartfelt messages on social media.
Despite her global performances since the 1990s, Hill has not released a follow-up to her eight-time platinum album. She reflected in 1999, “Everybody asks me, ‘What’s your next move?’, and right now my focus is just being a good mother. If I could be half the parent that my parents were to me, then I’d be very happy.”
To acknowledge Mother’s Day in 2021, Hill shared throwback photos of her children on social media, stating, “Motherhood is no doubt one of the most challenging albeit rewarding responsibilities in the world.”

It was one of the first things I did where I put my happiness first.”
