Warren Beatty and Annette Bening have celebrated over three decades of parenthood, beginning with the birth of their first child, Stephen, in 1992. This milestone coincided closely with the release of their first film together, Bugsy. They welcomed their second son, Benjamin, in 1994, followed by daughter Isabel in 1997, and Ella in 2000.
In 2004, Bening shared her decision to step back from acting to prioritize family time. "I couldn’t go from picture to picture," she remarked. "I’m too interested in the other things in life, like being with my kids and being with my husband."
Bening often integrated her children into her work, taking them along during filming, such as on location for Julia in Budapest and London. "They get a chance to see the world in a way that you don’t if you’re just a tourist," she noted.
She has also expressed admiration for Beatty’s parenting style, describing him as a "fantastic dad" who is "thoughtful and communicative." As their children have grown, each has developed their own individual paths.
Stephen Beatty, 34
Stephen Ira Beatty, the couple’s eldest child, was born on January 8, 1992, just a month after Bugsy premiered. Warren Beatty acknowledged their pregnancy in 1991 through a fax to PEOPLE, stating, "As you might have guessed, I’m still avoiding talking to the press about personal things, but I can tell you I couldn’t be happier about having a baby with Annette."
In 2012, Stephen publicly revealed his transition from female to male, asserting, "My name is Stephen. I identify as a trans man," in a video for We Happy Trans. While he did not mention his parents in that message, both Warren and Annette have made their support known. Annette expressed her pride in a 2019 interview, highlighting Stephen’s resilience and intelligence.
In a more recent conversation, Bening shared her protective feelings about Stephen’s privacy, saying, "At the beginning, I felt very protective of his privacy because he’s the son of these two famous people." She has since become an advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community, emphasizing the societal difficulties faced by trans individuals.
Benjamin Beatty, 31
Benjamin Beatty was born on August 23, 1994. In 2016, Warren described his relationship with Benjamin in an interview, expressing his delight that they were sharing dinner that evening. "I’m an attentive father," he shared, noting the balance he strives for in his parenting.
In recent years, Benjamin has followed in his parents’ footsteps, acting in projects such as Hail, Caesar! in 2016 and UFO in 2018. Annette has stated that motherhood has always been a profound aspiration for her, noting, "It just always felt natural to me."
Isabel Beatty, 28
Isabel Beatty, their third child, was born on January 11, 1997. A public figure on social media, she shares personal moments, including celebrations for her sister’s graduation and family gatherings.
In April 2022, Isabel posted a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter) for Warren’s 85th birthday, expressing her joy in celebrating such milestones with her family.
Ella Beatty, 25
The youngest, Ella Beatty, was born on April 8, 2000. She graduated from Juilliard in May 2022, and her mother has discussed the adjustments of becoming an empty nester, reflecting on the pride she feels for her children as they carve out their identities.
In October 2022, Ella announced via Instagram her casting in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming series Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, slated to premiere in January 2024. She shared insights about the influence of her parents, particularly noting their advocacy for kindness and respect in their professional and personal lives.
In March 2024, Ella reached a new milestone with her Broadway debut in the play Appropriate, alongside Sarah Paulson, continuing a legacy of artistic excellence in the Beatty-Bening family.
