A Closer Look at ‘The Moment’: Charli XCX Confronts Brat Summer in This Unique Mockumentary
As Charli XCX premieres her highly anticipated film The Moment at the Sundance Film Festival, the Aidan Zamiri-directed mockumentary symbolizes a pivotal moment in the pop star’s journey, arriving more than a year after her breakout summer. The premiere, held at the Eccles Theatre in Park City, Utah, showcased a double-feature that included Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex.
In The Moment, Charli portrays a fictionalized version of herself, navigating the challenges of launching her first arena tour amidst the massive success of her new album. The narrative illustrates how this burgeoning fame leads to an overwhelming force that Charli finds increasingly difficult to control.
“It’s become a bit cringe,” Charli reflects, alongside her team, on the ongoing brat mania that accompanies her fame. This comedic thread underscores her struggle to maintain creative freedom. Charli offers a powerhouse performance, effectively portraying a young woman grappling with the absurdities of fame, supported by her close friend and creative director, Collette (played by Hailey Gates).
Conflict arises when the music label introduces Johannes, a toxic concert film director portrayed by Alexander Skarsgård, whose effortless chauvinism dominates the atmosphere. The film features an ensemble cast, including notable names from past decades, such as Rosanna Arquette, Kylie Jenner, Rachel Sennott, and Julia Fox, alongside Isaac Powell and Rish Shah.
A reflection of 2024’s brief moment of optimism, The Moment opts for a meta-satire rather than a conventional concert film. Many fans may view it as a spiritual sequel to Spice World, enriched by the psychological thriller elements threaded throughout the storyline. Music for the film, crafted by longtime collaborator A.G. Cook, features emotionally charged singles like “Dread” and “Offscreen,” enhancing Charli’s already visceral sound.
Conceived as a personal exploration of her experiences with fame during her own Brat tour, The Moment materializes through the collaborative efforts of Zamiri and co-writer Bertie Brandes, offering an intimate glimpse into the life of one of today’s biggest stars. The film is produced by Charli XCX and David Hinojosa.
The Moment is set for a limited theatrical release on January 30.
