Céline Dion and René Angélil, who were married for 21 years, navigated numerous challenges throughout their relationship but remained deeply connected. The couple wed on December 17, 1994, after meeting when Dion was just 12. Their romance took a more serious turn when they went on an official date at 19, despite Dion’s initial hesitance to publicize their relationship for fear of public judgment. In her memoir, she noted, "When I was at the age to be able to say to people [we were together]… It was like bang! Love! Love always wins."
During their two decades together, they faced significant trials, including battles with cancer and infertility. The couple welcomed three sons: René-Charles, 24, and twins Nelson and Eddy, 15, before Angélil passed away from throat cancer in 2016.
Their Journey Together
Dion first crossed paths with Angélil when her brother sent a recording of her song to him, leading to an audition. "While I was singing, he started to cry," recalled Dion, indicating the moment she felt she’d made an impression.
Believing in her potential, Angélil mortgaged his home to fund Dion’s first album. This pivotal decision set her on a path toward stardom, starting with La Voix du bon Dieu, which became a hit in Québec.
Though Dion was a force in the Quebec music scene, it wasn’t until she sang "Beauty and the Beast" in 1991 that she garnered international acclaim. Meanwhile, her relationship with Angélil grew deeper, culminating in their engagement—though it remained a secret for two years.
They married in a lavish ceremony at Montréal’s Notre-Dame Basilica. Throughout their marriage, they faced Angélil’s cancer diagnosis in 1998, leading Dion to take a break from her career to support him.
In 2000, he was declared cancer-free, prompting the couple to renew their vows in a themed ceremony in Las Vegas. A year later, Dion gave birth to their first child, René Charles, after fertility treatments.
Challenges and Triumphs
Despite the joys of parenthood, Angélil’s health began to deteriorate again in 2014. Dion made the difficult decision to pause her career to care for him fully. In an interview, she reflected on her commitment to Angélil during this period, asserting, "My biggest job is to tell my husband, we’re fine."
Angélil passed away on January 14, 2016, shortly before his 74th birthday. After his death, Dion returned to the stage, holding a tribute concert that celebrated their life together, emphasizing that her career was an extension of his support and dreams.
Continuing His Legacy
Eight years after Angélil’s passing, Dion still feels his presence strongly in her life and that of their children. "I’m still married to René. He’s still my husband," she stated, highlighting her way of preserving his memory through photos and traditions.
As she navigates her career and personal challenges, Dion remains steadfast in her emotional bond with Angélil. She often expresses her commitment to him, saying, "I’m trying to prove to him every day I’m fine."
In a touching tribute for what would have been his 83rd birthday, Dion wrote, "Not a day goes by that we don’t feel your presence… You were my greatest champion, my partner, and the one who always saw the best in me."
