High School Boys Volleyball Playoffs: Quarterfinal Results
The high school boys volleyball playoffs saw intense action on Thursday, showcasing the competitive spirit of teams across various divisions.
In the City Section Division I quarterfinals, top-seeded Taft triumphed over ninth-seed East Valley with a score of 25-23, 23-25, 25-8, 25-18. Fourth-seeded North Hollywood edged past fifth-seeded VAAS in a closely contested match, winning 3-2. Third-seed Cleveland defeated sixth-seed Vaughn decisively, finishing 25-23, 25-22, 25-23. Additionally, second-seed Sylmar secured victory against seventh-seed Larchmont Charter with scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-20.
In Division II, top team LA Hamilton won against eighth-seeded Huntington Park, 3-0. The fourth-seed Marquez also claimed a straightforward victory over fifth-seed Bernstein, winning 3-0. Sixth-seed Narbonne asserted their strength, defeating third-seed Diego Rivera with another 3-0 scoreline. Seventh-seed Panorama pulled off a surprising win against second-seed LA University, taking the match 25-16, 24-26, 25-15, 25-20.
Moving to Division III’s second round, first-seed New West Charter overcame seventeenth-seed San Fernando, 25-14, 14-25, 26-24, 25-13, while ninth-seed Central City Value pulled off an upset against eighth-seed Foshay, winning 25-16, 13-25, 17-25, 28-26, 16-14. Fifth-seed University Prep Value defeated twelfth-seed Northridge Academy, 23-25, 29-27, 25-23, 25-22. Thirteenth-seed Birmingham surprised fourth-seed Sun Valley Magnet, winning 25-18, 25-21, 25-20. Furthermore, third-seed South East emerged victorious against fourteenth-seed Fairfax, 25-15, 25-19, 25-16. Eleventh-seed Monroe bested sixth-seed Reseda, winning 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, and seventh-seed Lincoln secured a victory against tenth-seed Animo Bunche, 21-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 15-8. Finally, second-seed Legacy progressed by defeating eighteenth-seed Granada Hills Kennedy, 25-21, 25-22, 25-15.
In Division IV, seventeenth-seed Canoga Park achieved a stunning upset over top-seed Hollywood with a score of 25-16, 25-17, 25-20. The eighth-seed Annenberg beat ninth-seed LACES, 3-0. Twelfth-seeded Mendez triumphed over fifth-seed Animo South LA in a close contest, winning 3-2. Fourth-seed Math & Science College advanced against twentieth-seed Chavez, 25-23, 25-18, 29-27, while third-seed Manual Arts secured a 3-1 win against nineteenth-seed West Adams. Sixth-seed King/Drew won a tightly contested match against eleventh-seed Animo Robinson, finishing 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-11. Seventh-seed Maywood CES defeated tenth-seed Arleta, 25-23, 24-26, 25-17, 25-16, and second-seed RFK Community overcame eighteenth-seed Community Charter, 22-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-22.
Finally, in Division V, top-seed WISH Academy claimed a straight-set victory over seventeenth-seed Garfield, 25-21, 25-14, 25-22. Ninth-seed Alliance Levine outperformed eighth-seed Locke, winning 25-19, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19. Twenty-first-seed LAAE upset fifth-seed Fulton, finishing 25-20, 24-26, 25-13, 25-20. Thirteenth-seed Rancho Dominguez defeated fourth-seed Animo Watts in a dramatic five-set match, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-16, 15-13. Fourteenth-seed Franklin took down third-seed Jefferson, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23. Sixth-seed Gardena won against eleventh-seed Stern, 25-13, 25-17, 25-19. Tenth-seed Animo De La Hoya overcame seventh-seed Horace Mann UCLA, finishing a tight match 25-27, 27-25, 25-20, 26-24. Lastly, fifteenth-seed Sotomayor defeated second-seed Bert Corona, winning 25-20, 25-20, 25-23.
Looking ahead, the quarterfinals for Divisions III-V are set for May 11, followed by semifinals for the Open Division and Division I on May 12, and the semifinals for Divisions II-V on May 13. The finals for all divisions will take place from May 15-16.
