Stanley Tucci Shares His Thoughts on Food Competition Shows: Why He Just Can’t Get Into Them
Stanley Tucci Discusses Decision to Avoid Food Competition Shows
Stanley Tucci has shared insights into his choice to decline invitations to participate in food competition shows, citing a fundamental belief that cooking should foster community rather than rivalry.
While promoting the new season of Tucci in Italy, Tucci revealed his perspective during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I don’t like competition when it comes to art or food,” he stated. “I think it’s silly. I know they’re hugely successful, but I just find it false and weird.”
The acclaimed actor emphasized that cooking is fundamentally about connection. “To me, cooking is the opposite of that,” he said. “It should be a thing that brings people together, not separates them. A thing that allows for communion, not for competition.”
As the host of Tucci in Italy, a travel and food series on National Geographic, and a former star of CNN’s Searching for Italy, Tucci expressed discomfort with the competitive nature of culinary shows. He described the grading of artistic efforts as “completely subjective,” reasoning that each person brings unique perceptions to the table.
“It’s wonderful when you get nominated for stuff. It’s wonderful when you get an award, but do I really believe… You know, because my dad was an art teacher, and he always said, ‘How am I supposed to grade this and this, and this?’” Tucci remarked. “They’re all different people, and they’re all different perceptions of what they’re seeing. It’s completely subjective. So, how do you grade that? How do you say, ‘You’re the best actor?’ Doesn’t make any sense.”
Given Tucci’s strong stance, it appears unlikely that he will make an appearance on popular competition programs such as Bravo’s Top Chef or Fox’s MasterChef.
The second season of Tucci in Italy is scheduled to debut on May 18 at 8 p.m. on National Geographic, with episodes available for streaming the following day on Disney+ and Hulu.
