Fashion icon Janelle Monáe turned heads at the 2026 Met Gala on May 4, showcasing a stunning custom gown designed by Christian Siriano.
The multi-talented artist’s floor-length gown seamlessly blended elements of nature and technology, featuring an intricate arrangement of wires and plants. The outfit was adorned with mechanical butterflies and dragonflies, including one perched atop her head.
In an Instagram post offering a closer look at her couture, Monáe invoked her futuristic alter ego Cindi Mayweather, a character central to her music since the release of her 2007 EP Metropolis: The Chase Suite. She noted, “And Cindi whispered from the future — remember what made you human.” The singer further expressed her appreciation for the team involved in creating her look, which included elements such as live moss, succulents, a motherboard, ethernet cables, 230 electrical wires, and 5,000 black crystals. “Thank you to the artisans and hands that built every fiber. It’s an honor to showcase your work,” she wrote.
Monáe’s appearance at the gala precedes the release of her new film, Is God Is, which is set to hit theaters in less than two weeks. In this upcoming thriller, adapted from a play of the same name, Monáe plays the role of a new wife navigating the aftermath of her husband’s previous violent actions, including an attempted murder of his former spouse and twin daughters in an intentional house fire. Monáe boasts an impressive acting portfolio, featuring roles in films such as 2017’s Hidden Figures, the Oscar-winning Moonlight, and the sequel to Knives Out, Knives Out: Glass Onion.
