EXCLUSIVE: A sequel to the 2013 boxing film Counterpunch, starring Danny Trejo, is currently in development.
Counterpunch 2 will feature the return of co-writer, producer, and star Alvaro Orlando through his production company, Unbreakable Studios. Alexis Knapp, known for her role in the Pitch Perfect franchise, is set to co-star, following their collaboration at the Golden State Film Festival on The Pick Up Artist, a film which Orlando directed and wrote.
The original film also featured actor Steven Bauer and focused on a fighter navigating mental health issues while seeking another opportunity in his professional career in California. It was distributed by Lionsgate through its Grindstone label.
As of now, there has been no confirmation regarding Trejo or Lionsgate’s involvement in the sequel, although discussions surrounding casting and financing are progressing.

The sequel aims to delve into themes of resilience, mental health, and compassion, presenting a more socially-driven narrative. Counterpunch 2 is set to heighten Orlando’s emotional stakes, framing boxing as a metaphor not only for survival but also for purpose.
“Counterpunch 2 is about what we fight for,” Orlando stated. “It’s about the silent battles so many people face and the strength it takes to keep going when no one is watching. At the same time, it’s about compassion and how we show up for ourselves and for those who cannot fight for themselves.”
